The Alpine Zoo (Alpenzoo Innsbruck) is not only known in Tyrol, but also far beyond its borders. This zoo is located in impressive position at the foot of the Nordkette mountain range fringing Innsbruck and provides an insight into the alpine animal world. Besides it offers a great view on the fascinating mountains as well as the city. Eventually it is one of Europe's highest located zoo (727 m a.s.l.), higher located is only the Parc Zoologique in La Chaux-de-Fonds (CH).
However, this zoo in the district of Hungerburg features more than 2,000 animals of 150 species on an area of 4.1 hectares. Almost all animals can be observed also in winter, except marmots, which oversleep this season, as well as snakes and amphibians, which spend it in their winter habitat. Other animals can be observed, but only if you look closely, because the snow grouse and mountain e.g. have got a very good camouflage.
In spring many young animals come out from behind and this attracts a large number of visitors. Pygmy mouses, terrapins, marine otters, brown bears, chamois and many other alpine animals live here. Some years ago, the museum at the Weiherburg, an old residence on the site of the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo, has been added: The small museum, a project in collaboration with the Tyrolean State Museums, can be visited with the same ticket.
